Accessibility Testing

Accessibility testing involves testing for compliance with accessibility standards, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which provides a set of guidelines for creating accessible web content. Accessibility testing can also involve testing for usability, such as testing the navigation and functionality of the digital content using assistive technologies, such as screen readers, voice recognition software, and other accessibility tools.

Accessibility testing should be an ongoing process throughout the development and maintenance of digital content.

Approach

Our resources use the User Testing approach which involves testing the digital content with people who have disabilities to get their feedback and identify any accessibility issues that may have been missed during manual or automated testing. User testing provides valuable feedback and insights into the actual user experience of people with disabilities.

Accessibility Audit approach involves conducting a comprehensive accessibility audit of the digital content to identify all accessibility issues and provide recommendations for remediation. Accessibility audits are typically conducted by experienced accessibility consultants or third-party auditors.

Tools

Here are some of the accessibility testing tools that our resources use:

WAVE is a free browser extension that can be used to evaluate web content for accessibility issues. Accessibility Insights is a suite of tools that can be used to identify accessibility issues in web applications. Axe is an open-source accessibility testing engine that can be integrated into various testing frameworks and tools. Google Lighthouse: It can be used to audit web applications for performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO. JAWS is a popular screen reader software that simulates the experience of a user with a visual impairment, providing valuable feedback on the accessibility of the content.

NVDA is a free and open-source screen reader software that can be used to test the accessibility of web content. Accessibility testing should be conducted early and often throughout the development process, and the feedback from testing should be used to continuously improve the accessibility of the digital content.
